Tony Zizzi
"I observe light and how it defines life about me. I attempt to compose it when it touches the earth in special ways. I have documented natural light through technical record keeping for over thirty-three years. It is through these lighting logs; with such information as: the Kelvin temperature of the light, the duration of color movement, the proper combination of f/stop and shutter speed at the time of this color movement, and more recently (recordings since 1996) the geometry of the light source at various intervals of the day to achieve the purest colors possible, that I have been allowed a greater understanding of light. With these technical tools I can explore the many uncharted and new tangents of Silver-based photography.
There is no manipulation with computer technology or special effect filters in my work. I use a mechanical camera with one high optical quality lens for each format and compose on Silver-Halide color slide film. My art is a reflection of the moment (sometimes extended moments in long exposures) and of what I was able to record upon the film in the experience before me. The prints are made with a strict fidelity to match what was composed on the slide film. The print is made on Fuji archival grade silver based printing material and developed in wet chemistry. I try to preserve my work using museum grade materials.
In the pursuit of special moments of light it is what is often hidden in them that can evoke emotions that lay dormant within the human spirit. It is an awakening of consciousness for me to record these moments upon the Silver-Halide. In this attempt to compose these rare moments of light I am sometimes able to achieve a certain version of perfection. In these endeavors I seek to define my purpose in this life. And when reaching this pinnacle I have come to realize that I am actually anchoring myself to some of the rare moments of my existence. The reward is like an emergence from the depths to breathe in fresh air." - Tony Zizzi 2008
