Joseph Craig English
Joseph Craig English is a local DC Metro area artist known for his bold, colorful serigraph prints that depict scenes from everyday that are so often taken for granted. His work has been purchased for hundreds of corporate collections, thousands of private collections and many prestigious musems. He accepts several special commissions annually for oil paintings and serigraphs and is currently building, along with other projects, a series of colorful mobiles.
English's work is done using the silkscreen process first used in this country to print cardboard boxes and packaging. It grew as an effective method for printing textile goods and wallpaper and then became popular in the art community from the inspiration of Andy Warhol. He uses the most traditional means of screenprinting to create serigraphs in which he hand-cuts lacquer-based stencils which are adhered to a silkscreen. He then prints onto rag paper by forcing ink through the holes in the stencil with a plastic bladed squeegee. This is known as "pulling" a print. The final print is called a serigraph.
